T̤auq o dār kā mausam / Time of Neck Chain and Gibbet

On every garden path, the very season for waiting starts;

Not all seasons are the season of spring.

.

The season of everyday-life sorrows is heavy upon the heart;

It is the time for the test of the beloved’s beauty.

.

How delightful is the time of seeing the lover’s cheek;

How delightful is the time of rest for the impatient heart.

.

If there is no talk. of wine and saqi, then of what use

Is the season of the cloud’s graceful walk on the mountain top?

.

If the company of friends is unavailable, of what good

Is this season of the shadows’ dance beneath the cypress and poplar?

.

These pains of the heart used to hurt like this, but not as much.

This time, the season of the separation of the lover, is more severe.

.

This is the time of madness, the time of neck chain and gibbet;

This is the season of determination, the season of freedom.

.

The cage is in your power, but not the season of the

Blooming forth of the flower’s fire in the garden.

.

The drunken, graceful gait of the breeze is not tied down!

Spring is not the captive of the net.

.

If we do not see, who cares? Others will see

The season of the garden blooming and the singing of the nightingale.
