Multilingual Literature: Review and Publish Project

The Multilingual Literature Review and Publish project invites you to contribute to the MULOSIGE website with reviews or blogs on texts in languages other than English. We are particularly interested in submissions that focus on texts from the Global South. The category of texts in this context will include: books, blogs, online texts and songs.

About MULOSIGE

The MULOSIGE (Multilingual Locals and Significant Geographies) project aims at developing new approaches to World Literature that explore the life of literature in multilingual societies and at making visible the literary talent and work in languages and forms that the anglophone book market fails to see and recognize.

As a multilingual community par excellence, SOAS students speak and learn a wide variety of World languages and are therefore able to access texts from all over the world. Yet, reading in a language other than English in the UK context could arguably be described as an act of dissonance with accepted practices, an act of rebellion, a route into decolonising literature.

Project Outline

The task:

    1. You are invited to write a 300-400 word critique/review of a text (a story or novel, a poem, a song) in any language other than English, preferably one from the Global South
    2. Critiques will be reviewed by the Multilingual Literature project team. Critiques that meet the success criteria will be published on the MULOSIGE website.

Reasons to submit:

This project aims to help you to contextualise your subject knowledge, extend your capacity for critical thinking and allow for creative engagement with your subject area! It will also allow you to have your work published on an online academic project.

Success Criteria

Successful submissions must be:

    1. Your own original work
    2. Preferably a critique concerning a book or text (song, spoken word) not yet translated into English
    3. Written in a lively and clear style: it should make us want to read or watch the text
    4. It should be properly referenced, with references to the primary text and any secondary sources
    5. No longer that 400 words.

Send all submissions to fo@soas.ac.uk with the subject line: SUBMISSIONS – Multilingual Literature Review and Publish.

The deadline for this project is: 1st June 23:55 BST.
